Hosford Abernethy Neighborhood borders the Willamette River, so is one of the east Portland neighborhoods that has it’s western side west of Division, full of commercial and industrial. The next little area between Ladds Addition and Division, is a mix of residential, commercial, apartments and retail. Ladds Addition starts at SE 12th and goes to SE 20th, beyond that, Hosford Abernethy Neighborhood is completely residential except for on the busy streets like Division or Powell. It is really made up of several different little local neighborhoods. One is Ladd’s Addition, which has it’s own page in our guide. It is a beautiful, unique neighborhood built around 5 rose gardens with diagonal streets linking them. Another local area is the Clinton neighborhood, which is centered around the little Clinton business district at SE Clinton and 26th. This is one of the most popular areas in Portland because of the wonderful restaurants, cafes, unique shops, and even a theater. It flows out onto the Division area, which has a New Seasons, and new restaurants opening all the time.
Hosford Abernethy Neighborhood boundaries are SE Hawthorne to the north, Powell to the south, the river to the west and SE 29th to the east. It borders on the Brooklyn and the Hawthorne District to the north, Buckman to the south, and Richmond to the east. As you go south and west, the neighborhood becomes more commercial and industrial- but as it goes north and east it is really hot! Ladds Addition is right in the middle of it- you can read more about this area below. You can go across the Ross Island or the Hawthorne Bridge to get into downtown- so it’s really close and easy! There are also lots of shops and cafes along Division and also along Hawthorne as you go east; and a New Seasons on Division and 20th Ave and a People’s Coop natural food market on SE 21st Ave.
The close in area around Division and 11th, is changing too. The old Ford building on 11th and Division has been turned into an artists enclave, with office space, retail space, and places for artists to work and display their creations. They describe themselves as A creative space in the heart of SE Portland. The building originally opened in 1914, and back then made Model T cars! The area is also home to food carts, which Portlander’s love! Cartopia is a collection of foodcarts on Hawthorne and 12th, with an amazing selection of different ethnic foods, and is especially popular in the evening because it stays open pretty late! The new Max orange line from Portland, through the South Waterfront, past OMSI, and into SE Portland, then continues on to Milwaukie, also stops in this area at 12th and Clinton and also 17th and Rhine. Whenever the Max comes in, an area blossoms and grows! And this area is doing a complete about face, and instead of just being an old tired industrial area, is becoming a destination for people who want food, shops and other entertainment!
Ladds Addition is a very special little area just west of the Hawthorne District- bordered on the north by SE Hawthorne, the south, Division- the east is SE 20 th and the west is Se 12 th Ave. It has a main center circle planted with roses, flowers and other plants- then the streets angle out from that circle to form a windmill kind of shape- Each arm has a smaller circle filled with rose bushes. Many of the streets are lined with big beautiful Elm trees- which adds to the beauty. The neighborhood is extremely expensive and high demand. There are some beautiful homes in there- everything is kept up nicely. There are also some really small homes that need lots of work- and are quite expensive! Most of the houses were built between 1905 and the 1920’s. You can learn more about Ladds Addition on our Ladds Addition neighborhood page.

History of Hosford Abernethy Neighborhood
The history is kind of interesting. It was owned by William Ladd- who had a 126 acre farm- which he divided up in 1891- and decided to make the layout unique. He had the central park area- which is the huge main circle, and then added the other diamond shaped rose garden circles. It was a good idea, because anyone who knows anything about Portland has heard of Ladds Addition! It is really in the Hosford-Abernathy neighborhood- but I decided it needed a place of it’s own! It is part of the historic walking tour and there are 177 historic designations in this 8 by 10 block area!
